How to Tell If a Pashmina Shawl Is Real Before You Buy

A useful Pashmina description should separate fibre, yarn preparation, weave and surface work. Plain, reversible, Kani, border-led and needlework pieces should be judged by their own construction rather than one generic luxury claim. Pashmina is related to cashmere, but those retail labels do not replace a written fibre specification.

For a shortlisted shawl, request current daylight photographs, a drape video, measured dimensions in centimetres and inches, written fibre and handwork notes, and certificate or GI information only where it applies to that exact piece. Avoid destructive home tests: no single ring, burn, softness or price test establishes authenticity.

Start with evidence, not a trick test

A ring test, burn test, first touch or unusually high price cannot prove that a shawl is authentic. Ask for the exact fibre statement, close views of the weave and edge, measured dimensions and the seller’s explanation of how the piece was made.

Verify fibre and provenance

Ask the seller to state the fibre composition for the exact shawl in writing, identify who issued each document and explain whether it certifies fibre, craft, origin or something else. Match any certificate, serial number, GI tag or QR record to the individual piece rather than accepting a generic collection document.

Inspect drape and surface

Still photographs show colour and pattern; a short movement video is better for reading weight, fall, sheen and how the border behaves when worn. For an overseas order, also confirm the delivery country, postcode, currency, payment route, packing and returns terms before paying.
