A hand-knotted silk rug from Kashmir should be compared through construction as well as composition: knotting method, pile and foundation fibre, reverse, fringe, scale, condition and surface all matter. “Hand-knotted” describes how the structure is made; it does not by itself prove that every fibre is silk.
Use this guide to understand those checks. When a design is shortlisted, request current front and reverse photographs, a pile and fringe close-up, measured dimensions in centimetres and feet, confirmed material, condition notes and available provenance for that individual rug.
In a hand-knotted rug, individual knots build the pile around the foundation. A hand-tufted rug uses yarn inserted through a backing and is a different construction. Both can be handmade, but they should not share one material or durability claim. Ask which method applies to the exact rug.
A straight photograph of the reverse, a close view of the pile and an image of the fringe help separate construction details from the visual design on the face.
Where silk is present, compare a full-frame photograph with detail views and ask for a current video when sheen and surface are important to the decision. Confirm the pile and foundation fibres separately rather than treating “silk rug” as a complete specification.
